Manchester at Christmas: A Guide to Festive Fun

World-class football, iconic bands, the industrial revolution… The list of what makes Manchester famous goes on and on, and it wouldn’t be complete without all the festive fun the city has to offer. The Christmas markets are an absolute highlight, but the holiday cheer doesn’t end there. Ice rinks, twinkling trails, themed parties, cosy meals, charming gifts – there’s “summat” special wherever you turn. As Santa and his helpers get their sleigh ready, the city comes alive and, as the Tony Walsh...

Time to change gears

2020 was a year most sectors would want to forget, and the automotive industry is no exception. Based on early market data, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that the global sales of automobiles dropped to under 64 million units – three years earlier they had peaked at 80 million. The chief reason for this decline was the pandemic. With countries around the world implementing lockdown measures, manufacturing essentially came to a halt. Additionally, consumer demand plunged: those of us who were thinking of getting a (new) car shelved the idea until an uncertain date.

Chasing the hydrogen rainbow

Hydrogen - is the lightest and most abundant element in the universe. On earth, it is most commonly found in water, but it exists in every living thing. It burns with an invisible flame. That’s probably all most of us remember about hydrogen from school, which doesn’t do justice to its versatility. After all, it’s not for nothing that there’s this buzz surrounding hydrogen and that it’s often considered the energy storage of the future.

Though it rarely exists

Free as a bird: Avoiding vendor lock-in in low code

iTunes is often said to have revolutionized the way we listen to music. Fair enough, but if you used Apple’s service in the early days, you will remember that once you’d purchased a song you couldn’t just share it with your friends. Unless they had the iTunes app or an iPod, you were unable to show them your new favorite tune because it wouldn’t play on their PC or laptop. Robbie Williams, Destiny’s Child and whoever else was featured in your music library were all locked in there. As were you –

IT myths: Everything must be in the cloud

You're becoming increasingly suspicious that some things you hear or read about IT aren't true. Who you gonna call? IT Mythbusters! 🔨

And that's us at ETRMServices, at least for a series of posts in which we debunk some wildly held hashtag#ITMyths that have persisted for too long. Ready?

Here's a big one to get us started: Everything must be in the cloud. 😶‍🌫️

Cloud migration is tempting, no doubt. We've all heard the arguments. Heck, we've even made the arguments! And most of the time, it's the right thing to do: the project is a success.

Hyperscale data centers

🤔 What do you picture when you hear the term hyperscale data center? Is it endless rows of servers; more or less a digital Indiana Jones warehouse?

Of course, that's part of it. But data centers are a lot more than just servers.

⚡ There is the infrastructure for power with utility connection and distribution, but also a robust backup system - uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems with huge batteries and massive diesel or gas-powered generators - because downtime is not an option.

What else?

Audit logging: are you comfortably numb?

"I'll need some information first, just the basic facts," says the auditor as you offer them a seat. "Can you show me where it hurts?" they add, and you conclude two things. 💡

First, you're in for a tough day - they mean business - and second, they're into the Pink Floyd classic "Comfortably Numb." And while nobody likes audits, there's a way for you to remain comfortable and not start feeling numb. Just keep reading this #NotJustAnotherBrick post.

Audits happen, whether you like it or not, so why not make sure you have nothing to worry about when they do? With the audit logging smart brick we offer in our low-code development platform, VisionX, you can.

But first, let's take a look at why so many platforms fail to deliver. 💣

Who changed exactly which field in which record, when and from where? That's five questions in one that could keep anyone up at night before the day of the audit. Imagine having to build audit logging from scratch, which is what a lot of low-code platforms would have their users do. Would you know how to track and revert changes? No, I didn't think so. 🙈

With VisionX's smart brick, it's a breeze. Just turn it on and logs are generated to track all changes. Want to know who updated Record A, or what changes were made in the Project B tracker at 9:00 the day before yesterday? No problem. Need to revert a change? Done. ✔️

When the auditor comes knocking, calling out "Hello? Is there anybody in there?" you can open the door with a smile on your face, relaxed as can be.

Free City Arrival: There and back in a new dimension

You associate drawbridges with medieval times and old castles? Well, that will change as soon as you've seen the one in Freistadt which leads to neoom's new headquarters, Free City. It's the future you'll find there!💫 Free City is like a new dimension - neoomiverse, as we like to call it - where day in, day out we work hard for a sustainable future. ⚡ With a 129 kWp PV system on the roof, 197 kWp PV on the façade plus a 1,200 KWh electricity storage system installed, Free City is a 5,619 square

A journey to the sun?

Ready to run power lines to the sun? It's only 152 million kilometers from earth to the center of the solar system, after all. That's the length of global power lines BloombergNEF analysts say it will take by 2050 to achieve the electrified, renewable-powered future we need to meet net zero goals. OK, so we're not really talking about transmission lines in space, but it's still a massive undertaking of NASA-like proportions, requiring trillions in investment. Not to mention time.

Kale will make your writing better

Yes, the blank page staring back at you is scary. If you've ever had to write anything, you know how hard it can be to get started. But there is something even scarier. 😱

Getting feedback on what you've written.

Why does it scare just about everyone? Because criticism, however valid, stings. 🐝

The thing is, though, it's an irrational fear. Like fear of flying, say, except you only benefit from criticism, at least as long as it's constructive. 🦅

With feedback, you get someone else's perspective, which helps you discover blind spots you may have. In other words, you learn.

Perfectionism: the silent killer of good ideas

Cliche alert: there's no such thing as 'perfect.' So if you're one of those people whose motto is "If it's not perfect, I'm not happy," read on and see if we can change your mind. 🤷‍♀️

Perfectionism may seem like your best friend because it promises to help you be/do your best. But actually, it holds you back by making you second guess yourself and become so self-critical you feel almost paralyzed.

It's a snake in your bosom. 🐍

A curse, even.

Write a first line that hooks your reader

💺 We write this sitting in the kitchen sink. Yes, all four of us at narrativio. Not in the same kitchen sink, though. That would be weird.

It's already weird, you say? We'd prefer the adjective "different". Or "exciting," even.

None of us are sitting in the kitchen sink, actually, but here's the thing.

🗨️ "I write this sitting in the kitchen sink" is the opening line in Dodie Smith's novel 𝘐 𝘊𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘦, published in the late 1940s. Would you read on? We'll bet you would.
